Fertility options for Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

At Care Fertility, we understand that fertility challenges can be complex and deeply personal. That’s why we individualise fertility counselling and treatment options.

Care Fertility provides evidence based and up-to-date care for women and their partners for family planning. We commonly encounter patients with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) and help them on their journey toward parenthood.

Understanding Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)

Premature Ovarian Insufficiency is when the ovaries stop producing typical amounts of hormone estrogen or releasing eggs regularly before the age of 40*. Approximately 1% of women are diagnosed with POI.

POI is different to early menopause, as early menopause is when a woman's last period is between the age of 40 to 45. POI is also different to natural menopause which occurs in women at the age of 51 years on average.

Impact on Fertility and Available Treatments

For women with POI, the natural pregnancy rate is significantly lower compared to those with normal ovarian function. Unfortunately, there are currently no interventions for women with POI to increase natural pregnancy or restore ovarian activity but many women chose to avoid contraception to have the chance of a natural pregnancy.*

Fertility Options for Women with POI

Use of donated oocytes (eggs) is a recommended treatment for women with POI who are wanting to fall pregnant. Care Fertility can facilitate this process, ensuring that you receive the support and care you need every step of the way.

Comprehensive Management and Support

Managing POI involves addressing various health aspects beyond fertility treatment. Due to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease, focusing on lifestyle factors is crucial for overall health improvement. In addition low levels of oestrogen are associated with reduced bone density and risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Discussions with your GP/Endocrinologist about lifestyle adjustments and regular monitoring can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and ensure that bone mineral density is maintained.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can alleviate POI symptoms such as hot flushes, cognitive dysfunction (often called “brain fog”), mood changes, vaginal dryness, and difficulty sleeping. Safety of hormone replacement therapy is often not a concern for young women before the age of natural menopause unless they have had past breast cancer or blood clots. Even then many treatment options are available.

Emotional and Psychological Impact of POI

Coping with the diagnosis of POI and its implications can be challenging. Feelings of uncertainty and concerns are common. The Daisy Network is dedicated to providing information and support to women diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency.

Lifestyle recommendations for women with POI

We encourage all women, especially those with POI, to prioritise their overall health by:

  • Maintain normal range body mass index
  • Avoid smoking
  • Minimise alcohol
  • Regular weight bearing exercise to optimise bone health
  • Dietary moderation and especially optimise calcium intake
  • Maintain normal range vitamin D
