Sperm DNA Fragmentation Testing

Sperm DNA fragmentation refers to breaks or damage within the DNA carried by spermatozoa.
While a standard semen analysis assesses the concentration, motility and morphology, it does not assess DNA integrity.
Elevated DNA fragmentation has been associated with;
Reduced fertilisation and blastocyst development, an increased risk in miscarriage and
lower live birth rates, even with normal semen parameters.

Testing the sperm DNA fragmentation may help to explain recurrent implantation failure or early pregnancy loss, guide male-factor optimisation strategies and provide you with the knowledge and information to assist you with decision making with treatment.

Testing may be considered in men with;

• Unexplained infertility
• Recurrent pregnancy loss in the female partner
• Poor blastulation (50% of fertilised oocytes should become blastocysts) after IVF or ICSI
• A normal semen analysis, but poor embryo development
• Clinical varicocele
• An advanced paternal age
• Certain lifestyle or environmental risk factors (smoking, obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, heat-exposure, oxidative stress)
• A diagnosed systemic illness or inflammatory condition.

Sperm DNA fragmentation is often linked to a range of contributing factors, including infections, increased testicular heat, and exposure to harmful substances. It has been strongly associated with toxins found in cigarette smoke, recreational drug use, and alcohol consumption. In addition, factors such as poor nutrition and environmental pollutants may also play a role.

So, what steps can be taken to improve this?
Simple lifestyle changes can make a meaningful difference. Adopting a balanced, nutrient-rich diet and losing weight if required, quitting smoking and reducing alcohol intake may all help support better sperm DNA quality over time.

Arranging a test is simple, it is non-invasive and performed on a sample of your semen.
Tests can be arranged as a part of your fertility assessment or prior to treatment.
