However, IUI does not have a greatly increased chance of conceiving a pregnancy compared to sexual intercourse – perhaps an increase of 1-2% per cycle. It is particularly not beneficial when there is a low or abnormal sperm count or damaged fallopian tubes. In fact, having IUI is associated with a risk of infection in the fallopian tubes, though the risk is quite low (1 out of every 500).

There is a significant benefit of IUI when a couple are unable to have sexual intercourse. It’s also important that before having IUI, a semen analysis of the male partner should be normal.

Before having IUI, it is advised that a laparoscopy should be performed to ensure that there is no scarring around the fallopian tubes and ovaries, which can worsen following IUI and might reduce the chance of success rate.
